The Border Project

Cobach High School Students--  Sonoyta, Mexico. 8th grade through 10th grade students.

Ajo High School Students-- Ajo, AZ. Mr. Crable's first period art class.

Tohono O'odham High School Students--  Tohono O'odham Nation, Sells, AZ.  Mr. Calabaza's third and fourth period art classes.

On August 22, 2008, the students who participated in The Border Project came together at the Tohono O’odham Cultural Center and Museum for a Student Celebration.  They traveled from Ajo, Sonoyta Mexico, and San Simon for a day of cultural exchange, social interaction, and idea sharing on the topic of borders.  We started the day with an O’odham blessing, held small group discussions, visited the Border Project exhibit, heard the Vice Chairperson of the Nation speak during a great lunch, and closed the day with student speeches from each of the three schools.  It was a powerful and memorable experience for all involved.

Morgana Wallace--  Curley School resident artist. Certified teacher, Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, painter, and mixed media installation artist.

Jewel Fraser Clearwater--  Curley School resident artist. Photographer. Psychologist and guidance counselor. Spiritual intuitive.

The Border Project Committee-- Since its creation in October 2007, The Border Project has attracted the involvement and support of many skilled individuals. These individuals have naturally formed a committee which now drives the evolution of the project. This committee consists of the following members:

  • Morgana Wallace - Artist, Art Teacher
  • Jewel Fraser Clearwater - Photographer
  • Connie Villaverde - Translator and Mexico Liaison
  • Ralph Hudson - Construction Advisor
  • Aaron Cooper - Technician
  • Jim Reiman - Construction Advisor
  • Allison Francisco – Museum Advisor and Tohono O’odham Liaison
  • Adrian Vega – Installation Specialist

The committee meets at least once per month and communicates regularly, sharing ideas and moving the project to its next stage of development. Additional members are welcome as the committee is open and excited about expanding the group and in turn the project.
